HUAWEI Kirin 990 and Kirin 990 5G 7nm Octa-Core chipsets announced

Huawei took to IFA 2019 where it has announced its Kirin 990 and Kirin 990 5G SoC. Both of them share similar specs with few differences.

The Huawei Kirin 990 comes with octa-core processor consisting of Two 2.86GHz ARM Cortex-A76 CPU + Two 2.09GHz dual-core ARM Cortex-A76 CPU + Four 1.86GHz ARM Cortex-A55 CPU. It is based on TSMC 7nm Process. It has integrated multi-mode 4G LTE modem.

The Huawei Kirin 990 5G features in 2.86GHz ARM Cortex-A76 x 2 + 2.36GHz ARM Cortex-A76 x 2 + 1.95GHz ARM Cortex-A55 x 4 Octa-cores and is based on TSMC’s 7FF+ with EUV process. It has built-in 5G modem (supports Sub-6GHz 5G SA neworks SA/NSA architecture) which offers 2.3Gbps download speed and 1.25Gbps upload. When combined with LTE, speeds can go up to 3.3Gbps download and 1.32Gbps upload. The Chipset is claimed to be 20% more energy efficient and saves 40% more bandwidth when compared to Kirin 980.

The Kirin 990 5G sports new ISP 5.0 which has 15% increased through put rate and is 15% more energy efficient. Apart from improved video processing capabilities, it hs BM3D dual-domain video noise reduction technology and new New Face AR for modeling of faces, real time tracking etc.

Both Huawei Kirin 990 / Kirin 990 5G comes with ARM Mali-G76 MP16 (16-core) GPU. It offers 6% improved graphics performance when compared to Kirin 980. They have 2 + 1 D Vinci NPU and supports LPDDR4X memory along with UFS 3.0 / UFS 2.1 storage. These SoC’s have built-in security engine and can handle HDR 10, 4K decoding at 60fps and 4K encoding at 30fps.

The Huawei Kirin 990 and Kirin 990 5G will be first seen inside upcomign Mate 30 series, which is slated to go official at an event in Germany on Spetember 19th.
