Samsung unveils 50MP ISOCELL GN2 sensor with faster more True-to-Life Auto Focusing

Samsung Electronics, a company also known for its advanced semiconductor technology has unveiled its latest Samsung ISOCELL GN2 50MP imaging sensor.

The Samsung ISOCELL GN2 offers up to 100MP imaging and leverages Dual Pixel Pro technology for improved auto-focusing. The 1/1.12-inch ISOCELL GN2 sensor offers 50 million 1.4μm-sized pixels and delivers detailed photographs on regular settings.

Under low light environments, the sensor can simulate 2.8μm-pixel with four-pixel-binning technology to absorb more light. It also offers option to take pictures in 100MP resolution. Under 100MP mode, GN2 re-arranges color pixels using intelligent re-mosaic algorithm, creating three individual layers of 50MP frames in green / red / blue. These frames are then up-scaled and merged to produce a single ultra-high 100MP resolution photograph.

The Samsung GN2 imaging sensor is Samsung’s first to offer Dual Pixel Pro, which is company’s most advanced phase-detection auto-focus solution yet. The Dual Pixel Pro uses one hundred million phase detecting agents for ultra-fast auto-focusing. Additionally, it also offers all-direction focusing by splitting pixels vertically and diagonally. Low-light focusing and tracking of moving objects has been improved too.

The ISOCELL GN2 also increases dynamic range in mixed-light environments with a staggered-HDR feature which uses a time-multiplexed HDR technology. It rolls shutters over the same pixel array to capture multiple frames in short, middle and long exposures to ensure rich detail and vivid colors and dark shadows. Samsung says that Staggered-HDR reduces energy consumption of a sensor by up to 24% when compared to its predecessor.

The GN2 also comes with Smart ISO and Smart ISO Pro. Smart ISO intelligently sets the sensor’s conversion gain, allowing the picture to be taken using an optimal ISO; low ISO for brighter outdoors or high for dimmer indoors. The GN2 supports full-HD videos at 480 frames-per-second (fps) or 4K at 120fps, enabling wider possibilities for mobile video-shooting.

Samsung has already started mass production of ISOCELL GN2. [source]
