Fitbit Charge 5 announced with GPS, health features

Google under its Fitbit brand, has officially introduced its latest health and fitness smartband called Fitbit Charge 5. It is compatible with both Android OS 8.0 (or higher) and Apple iOS 12.2 (or higher).

Fitbit Charge 5 features and specifications

The Fitbit Charge 5 has a streamlined and aerodynamic design that comfortably fits on wrist. It has 1.04-inch always-on AMOLED display with Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection. Notably, 5th generation is 10% thinner than Charge 4.

The Charge 5 is Fitbit’s most advanced health and fitness tracker yet. Company has used aluminum, glass and resin in its making. It comes with silicone band with aluminum buckle. The smartband is also water resistant up to 50 meters.

The Fitbit Charge 5 has plethora of sensors. It has Optical Heart Rate monitor, 3-axis accelerometer, Red and Infrared sensor for checking Oxygen Saturation (SpO2), Device temperature sensor (skin temperature variation available in the Fitbit app), Vibration motor, Ambient light sensor, NFC and Multi-purpose electrical sensors compatible with ECG app and EDA scan app.

The tracker has Fitbit ECG (Electrocardiogram) App which can assess your heart for atrial fibrillation, heart rhythm irregularity. Feature to share the results with doctor will be added soon.

Also included is an EDA (Electrodermal Activity) scan App which detects tiny changes in your skin’s sweat level which may indicate your body’s stress levels. The Charge 5 also gives out stress management scores. The fitness band offers 24/7 heart rate tracking with PurePulse, Heart Rate Variability, Breathing rate trend, daily Readiness score and Active Zone Minutes.

The Fitbit Charge 5 feature built-in GPS to keep tabs on real-time pace and distance without the need of your phone. The Fitbit App can show a map of your workout route. It has 20 exercise modes and offers real-time stats to maintain your targets. The tracker also offers Cardio Fitness level with VO2 max.

When connected with smartphones, it also gives out notifications about calls, texts, calendar events, emails and social updates. Quick reply feature is available for Android users only. Android smartphone users also get Google Fast Pair support.

The Fitbit Charge 5 comes with Fitbit Pay to make contact-less purchases. It has Sleep Mode, smart wake and Do Not Disturb. Tracker’s built-in memory can save 7 days of detailed motion data minute by minute. It saves daily totals for the last 30 days, store heart rate data at 1 second intervals during exercise tracking and at 5 second intervals al other times.

The Fitbit Charge 5 battery offers up to 7 days of use. The Battery backup depends on use of always-on display, spO2 and GPS features. Its built-in Lithium-Polymer battery fully charges in just about 2 hours.

Fitbit Charge 5 price and availability

The Charge 5 is available in US for $179.95 and includes six-month Premium membership. It is up for order at company’s official site.

The Charge 5 is also listed in Canada for CAD 230, in UK For £170 and in France and Germany for €180. In Australia, you can order Fitbit Charge 5 for AUD 270 while in New Zealand, it has price-tag of NZD 300.
