Back in June, Xiaomi announced Redmi 6A smartphone. It came with then unannounced MediaTek Helio A22 chipset. Today, MediaTek has officially unveiled Helio A22 SoC.
It is a budget chipset which is based on 12nm TSMC FinFET technology. The SoC is capable of handling HD+ (1600 x 720) resolution with 20:9 aspect ratio.
The MediaTek Helio A22 features in 2GHz Coretex-A53 quad-cores and is paired with IMG PowerVR GE-Class GPU. According to the company claims, the processor is 30% faster and GPU is 72% faster than its direct alternative.
The chipset supports up to 4GB (933MHz) LPDDR3 RAM or up to 6GB (1600MHz) LPDDR4X RAM and eMMC 5.1 storage. Its AI Capabilities is an added bonus, which brings support for Face ID (Face Unlock) and smart photo albums. It has common AIM framework and fully complies with Android Neural Networks API (Android NNAPI) which allows developers and device makers to best use the AI-ecosystem.
The Helio A22 chipset is capable of handling a single 21MP camera or 13MP + 8MP dual rear cameras. Some of the features include Face ID, AI Smart Photo ALbum, Bokeh, MEMA, 3DNR, Multi-Frame noise reduction and 1080p video at 30fps
It has 4G LTE WorldMode modem which allows dual 4G SIM with VoLTE/ViLTE), Dual 4G VoLTE (DSDS), EMBMS, Carrier Aggregation (CA), CDMA2000 1x/EVDO Rev. A (SRLTE) etc. It can deliver Cat.7 DL and Cat.13 UL speeds. This is possible thanks to MediaTek TAS 2.0 smart antenna technology.
Usual connectivity options like Wi-fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth V5.0, GPS/GLONASS/Beidou, ANT+ and FM will be supported as well.
The MediaTek Helio A22 SoC is already in production. We should see more budget mobiles with Helio A22 later this year and next year.
