Samsung at IFA 2016 has unveiled its latest smartwatch’s dubbed at Gear S3 Classic and Gear S3 Frontier. They run on Tizen based wearable platform 2.3.2.
They are IP68 rated for dust / water resistance and comes equipped with NFC. They have Magnetic Secure Transmission (MST) support as well allows mobile payments using Samsung Pay. They have built-in speaker that allows voice messaging and music listening. GPS is also present as previously rumored.
Both the Gear S3 smartwatches are compatible with 22mm watch bands. The Samsung Gear S3 Classic and Gear S3 Frontier features in 1.3-Inch circular Super AMOLED always on display (always shows time). It has 360 x 360 pixels resolution at 278ppi pixel density.
Under the hood is 1GHz dual-core processor with 768MB RAM and 4GB storage ROM. They come bundled with Accelerometer, Gyroscope, Heart Rate sensor, Ambient light and Barometer. They have 380 mAh Li-Ion battery that offers up to 4 days of battery life. WPC Inductive wireless charging is also supported.
The Samsung Gear S3 Classic has dimensions of 46 x 49 x 12.9 mm and weighs 57 grams. The Gear S3 Frontier has the same measurements but weighs 62 grams (both without bands). The latter supports 3G / 4G LTE as well. Other common connectivity features include Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth V4.2, NFC, A-GPS/GLONASS etc.
These smartwatches come with rotating bezels that allows wearer to accept / reject calls, snooze alarms etc. Users can also create short reminders and write messages on displays. It also has special SOS function with that sends location to family, friends or emergency professionals. These watches also integrates BMW’s personal mobility companion that send alerts, check fuel level, unlock BMW Car etc.
The Samsung Gear S3 Classic smartwatch is priced at US$ 299. The S3 Classic and Gear S3 Frontier will start rolling out in October 2016.
